1A Girls Basketball State Tournament Day One Game Recaps

The first day of the Class 1A state basketball championships is going on in Casper.

Game 5: Cokeville 51 Southeast 43 (semifinal #1)

The two-time defending champion Cokeville Panthers overcame a slow start to beat Southeast 51-43 and earn a spot in the 1A state championship game on Thursday in Casper.

Southeast had an early 7-2 lead, but that disappeared by the end of the first quarter, and Cokeville was ahead, 11-9. The Panthers poured it on in the second with 19 points thanks to 56 percent shooting. It was 30-15 at halftime.

The Cyclones fought back in the third and got themselves back into the game. They outscored Cokeville 18-11 in the period and pulled within 41-33. Southeast got within 41-38 with 5:20 left, but that's as close as they would get. The Panthers hit clutch free-throws in the final minutes to preserves their eight-point victory.

Emmie Barnes and Rylee Teichert led Cokeville with 18 and 16 points, respectively. The Panthers shot 39.6 percent in the game, as they were held to 21.7 percent in the second half. Cokeville went 11-12 at the charity stripe in the second half.

Sydney Anderson paced Southeast with 13 points. Kealy Carson added 12. The Cyclones made 37.8 percent of their field goal attempts.

The two teams combined for 42 turnovers.

Cokeville will play for the 1A girls' title at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday against Upton.

Game 6: Upton 34 Kaycee 33 (semifinal #2)

The Upton Bobcats held off the Kaycee Buckaroos in the fourth meeting between the two schools this season, 34-33, in the 1A girls' semifinals on Wednesday night in Casper.

Upton will make their first title game appearance since 1984 and only the second in school history.

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball. It was only 4-4 after the first quarter. A 6-0 run at the end of the half gave Upton a 10-9 lead at the break. The Bobcats stretched their lead to 25-17 early in the fourth quarter. Kaycee rallied and tied the game at 33-33 with less than a minute left on a pair of free throws by Jackie Ramirez.

With 16.3 seconds left, Katlyn Louderback made 1-2 free throws that proved to be the game-winner. The Buckaroos missed a shot, while Upton missed two three throws with three seconds left.

Louderback scored a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Upton shot just 27 percent from the floor.

Kaycee got 12 points from Tinley Pierson, but the Buckaroos shot 19 percent in the game.

The two teams combined for 46 turnovers.

Upton will face two-time defending champ Cokeville for the 1A state championship on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Ford Wyoming Center.

Game 1: Southeast 34 Farson-Eden 26

Kealy Carson scored 14 points to lead the Cyclones past the Pronghorns, 34-26, in first-round play at the 1A girls' basketball state tournament.

Southeast trailed 7-5 after the first quarter but outscored Farson-Eden 14-7 in the second and took the lead for good. The Cyclones led 19-14 at halftime. They enjoyed their biggest lead of 28-19 in the third quarter.

Carson made four 3-pointers, as Southeast shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, 4-of-8. The Cyclones shot 38.5 percent in the game.

Farson-Eden was led by Ighlee Thoren and Tyra Thoren with 8 points apiece. The Pronghorns shot 37.5 percent from the field but were just 1-11 from deep.

Southeast advances to play Cokeville in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Game 2: Cokeville 72 H.E.M. 32

The two-time defending champion Cokeville Panthers had no trouble with the H.E.M. Miners, 72-32, in the first round of the 1A girls' state basketball tournament.

Cokeville jumped out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and didn't look back. The Panthers led 36-20 at halftime and then allowed only 12 points in the second half.

Kylee Dayton scored 14 points, Rylee Teichert added 12 points, and Emmie Barnes contributed 10. Cokeville shot 43.5 percent in the game. They enjoyed a 42-26 edge in rebounding and forced 38 H.E.M. turnovers.

The Miners were led by Taylar Scott with 16 points, but they shot only 30 percent for the game.

The Panthers will play Southeast in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Game 3: Upton 76 Burlington 56

Four Bobcats scored in double figures, as Upton rallied from a slow start to beat Burlington 76-56.

Alyson Louderback had 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Bobcats. Katlyn Louderback scored 17 points, Jerrica Caylor scored 13, and Paige Timberman added 11 points for Upton.

Burlington held an early 14-5 lead and enjoyed a 20-11 advantage after the first quarter. Upton came back and thanks to a 14-0 run to end the half, they held a 33-29 lead over the Huskies at the break. The Bobcats opened up a 51-40 lead late in the third before Burlington cut it to 51-45 at the end of the period. Upton kept the pressure on and pulled away for the 20-point win.

Kelsi Nicholson finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies. Burlington shot 46 percent for the game, but they also had 40 turnovers.

Upton shot 41 percent from the field. The Bobcats had a 45-30 edge on the glass, but they also had 22 turnovers.

Upton advances to the semifinals against Kaycee at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Game 4: Kaycee 34 Ten Sleep 8

After a slow start, the Kaycee Buckaroos steadily pulled away and dominated the Ten Sleep Pioneers, 34-8, Thursday morning at the Ford Wyoming Center.

It was 3-2 Kaycee after the first quarter. The Buckaroos outscored the Pioneers 13-1 in the second quarter for a 16-3 lead at halftime. Kaycee scored 18 more in the second half while limited Ten Sleep to five.

Tinley Pierson and Bindi Hill had nine points each to pace the Buckaroos. They shot 31 percent for the game.

Josie Decker scored three points to lead Ten Sleep. The Pioneers were just 2-28 on field goals, seven percent from the field. They also had 22 turnovers.

Kaycee will play Upton in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
