Laramie’s Olivia McPherson has been a star on the big stage of Wyoming high school swimming for the past three years. This year, of 2019, is no different.

McPherson is the leader of a Laramie girls’ swimming and diving team that is going for their third straight team title later this week in Gillette.

As a freshman, McPherson won the state title in the 50 freestyle race and helped the Lady Plainsmen to a runner-up finish. Each of the last two years, she’s won the 50 freestyle race and been part of two victorious relays, the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Last year, McPherson added a sweep of the sprint freestyle races with a victory in 100. In 2018, she was named the Class 4A “Swimmer of the Meet” at the state championships and “Swimmer of the Year” for the season.

WyoPreps’ David Settle caught up with the senior, who is committed to swim at the University of South Carolina next year, along with her head coach, Tom Hudson, to talk about her swimming, her passion for the sport, her work ethic, and much more in the video above.

McPherson is currently ranked first in five different swimming events. They are the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 individual medley events. She’s ranked third in the 200 freestyle.

This senior will lead Laramie into the Class 4A State Championships Friday and Saturday at the Campbell County Aquatics Center.
