Here is a release from the National Weather Service...

Widespread and dangerous high wind event to continue through tonight.

Strong winds have developed across much of southeast Wyoming late this morning with wind gusts in excess of 60 mph at many locations. An impressive pressure gradient combined with very strong flow just above the surface will continue to create the potential for wind gusts between 80 and 90 mph, particularly in the wind prone locations of Arlington, Bordeaux, and Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie. Winds will diminish over the Plains after sunset, but will remain strong in the wind prone areas through early Tuesday morning. This is a very dangerous situation, especially for motorists traveling along Interstates 80 and 25 in southeast Wyoming. In addition to the wind, areas of blowing snow are creating slick spots and areas of very low visibility in blowing snow. If roads are not closed, travel is highly discouraged.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 pm MST this evening.

  • Timing: Very Strong winds will continue through sunset.
  • Winds: West to southwest 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 65 mph. A few higher gusts are possible. This could combine with recent snowpack to result in areas of blowing and drifting snow with very low visibilities.
  • Impacts: mainly to transportation. Travel on Interstate 80 from Laramie to Rawlins could be severely impacted. Severe cross winds that could lead to Blowoffs and blow overs of high profile and light weight vehicles are possible. Areas of blowing and drifting snow could make travel extremely dangerous or even impossible in some areas. Interstate 80 has been closed across much of southeast Wyoming east of Rawlins due to dangerous winter driving conditions.
