Volunteers Needed to Rehabilitate Old Trails on Pole Mountain
The U.S. Forest Service is looking for volunteers to help in rehabilitating an old section of the Headquarters Trail on the Pole Mountain unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest.
A Wyoming Conservation Corps crew and another contractor have rerouted multiple trails on Pole Mountain and a quarter mile section of the Headquarters Trail has been finished. Now, volunteers are being asked to come help decommission the old section of trail.
Volunteers will be decommissioning the trail from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 29. They will be using tools to level the old trail as well as spreading seed and woody debris to encourage regrowth. Once they complete the rehab work on Headquarters, they will move on to a section of Middle Aspen Trail near the old Pole Creek Campground.
Those who want to help out should meet at the east Headquarters Trailhead, off of Forest Road 707, or Blair-Wallis Road. The trailhead is about 1.5 miles southeast of the turnoff from Wyoming Highway 210, Happy Jack Highway.
The Forest Service says this volunteer event is part of a larger, multi-year cooperative effort to build and maintain trails on Pole Mountain. The U.S. Forest Service’s Laramie Ranger District has partnered with the Wyoming Pathways organization, the WCC and the Common Outdoor Ground, a community organization in southeast Wyoming.
Free food will be provided by Wyoming Pathways, with additional event contribution from the Pedal House in Laramie, Wyoming State Parks and WCC. Volunteers should bring work gloves and appropriate clothing, sunscreen and bug spray.
Those interested in volunteering for the trail event can email commonoutdoorground@gmail.com or message COG on Facebook at ‘Common Outdoor Ground.’
