The Pony Express Rides Through Wyoming Again

It only existed for 19 months. but from 1860 to 1861, the start of the Civil War, the Pony Express was the fastest way to get a letter from one end of the country to the other.

And on the way, it carved itself a niche as one of the most daring and romantic chapters of the opening of the west. The advertisement recruiting young riders was blunt..."Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred."

The most famous was William F. Cody, later known as Buffalo Bill, and every year the National Pony Express Association can give you a taste of what young Buffalo Bill's life was like.

Their annual re-creation of the ride is coming in the first two weeks of June. 600 riders will take part riding in relays of 1-5  miles starting in St. Joseph, Missouri on June 5th and ending in Sacramento, California June 15th. And along the way, they'll be riding through Ft. Laramie and later, Casper.

The riders will be crossing from Nebraska into Wyoming on June 8th, and from Wyoming into Utah on June 12th.
