The 2016 high school indoor track season begins this weekend. Laramie High School will be heading to Spearfish, SD for competition Saturday.

Laramie produced some great results at the state meet last year. The Plainsmen finished in second place by only a half point, while the Lady Plainsmen came in third place.

This year only 14 letterwinners return.

Head coach Greg Schabron feels despite the lack of indoor track experience, Laramie will still be in the mix.

“We’ve got more with outdoor experience, so we’ve got some adjustments to make in that aspect. With kids we have, they have track experience to really compete this year.”

Laramie is led by returning All-State performers Chris Henry and Kayla Sherrodd. They are two of the 67 student-athletes that will represent LHS during the season.

Schabron believes the Central, Gillette and Natrona boys’ team will be strong, while Central and Gillette will be teams to beat on the ladies side.

Even with the first meet just two weeks into the season, Schabron doesn’t have concerns going in.

“The energy level is really high right now… we’re excited for it. We’re trying to downplay the importance of specific marks, but more the experience. From that point, we’ll start to really set goals for the kids after they get this first round out of the way.”

First up is the Stadium Sports Grill High School Classic hosted by Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. Field Events will begin at 9:15 a.m. followed by the running events at 10:30 a.m.
