Talent, speed litter Wyoming’s young tight end group
LARAMIE -- There aren't many positions to be won in fall camp, but Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl is keeping a close eye on a pair of upstart tight ends.
Treyton Welch and Parker Christensen have been slugging it out since the spring in hopes of snatching the starting gig.
Either way, Bohl said, both will see plenty of playing time in 2021.
"I think Treyton and Parker both have, I think, exceptional skills between blocking and route running, which is really good," Bohl said Tuesday afternoon in Laramie.
Could these guys possibly see the field at the same time?
"We have used two tight ends and that's part of the prostyle system, which we run," Bohl said. "There will be three (wide receivers), sometimes it's two tight ends and sometimes three tight ends. So, it gives us a lot of flexibility.
"It's been a long time since we've had the depth that we have at that position and we certainly need to utilize it."

Welch is a 6-foot-3, 233 -pound sophomore from Buffalo, Minnesota. He snagged five catches for 95 yards in 2020. Christensen, the former Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year from Sheridan, caught just two passes for 28 yards, including a long of 21 on the road at UNLV.
Both of these guys were crucial in helping pave the way for Xazavian Valladay to claim his second straight Mountain West rushing crown last fall.
Wyoming also has 2020 junior college transfer, Colin O'Brien, and true freshman John Michael Gyllenborg on the roster. Jackson Marcotte, the 6-foot-7 pass catcher from Illinois, appeared in five of the Cowboys' six games last fall, hauling in one pass for 12 yards.
He missed the spring with an injury and his playing status for 2021 is unclear.
