The Battle Pass Byway is one of the most scenic drives in the Cowboy State. The 11-mile stretch of WY-70 from Encampment to Slaughterhouse Gulch may also be the most haunted road in Wyoming.

Located in the Sierra Madre Range of the Medicine Bow National Forest, it was a popular area for prospecting in the late 1800s. According to local legend, the ghost of a miner killed in an underground explosion still roams the old trail at night.

Shortly after the incident, a stagecoach driver along the route reported a stranger walking on the side of the road. After spooking the horses, the man vanished into thin air. Years later, several forest rangers were camped out in the area when they saw the man wandering down the road. When they approached the stranger, he disappeared.

The Ghost of the Slaughterhouse Gulch is one of several famous stories in the area. Thomas Edison was reportedly inspired to invent the light bulb while fishing at nearby Battle Lake in 1878.
