As you may have heard, there's a new supercomputer, which will be based in Cheyenne, and will rank among the world's fastest supercomputers in existence. What you may not know is that the new supercomputer has a new name, thanks to the help from an eighth-grader in Riverton, WY.

There's a new supercomputer that will soon by coming to Wyoming, in Cheyenne nonetheless, and it will rank among the fastest supercomputers throughout the world.

Nichols said semi-finalists would be announced around March, following site visits, and that the grant-winner would likely not be announced until June.

The machine put to work earlier this year in an office park just outside Cheyenne also will help scientists understand how solar flares affect satellites and communications.

UW faculty members will lead projects – including identification of promising catalysts for carbon fuel and chemical production, cloud seeding and a study of the Blair-Wallis watershed- that will use the NCAR- Wyoming Supercomputing Center.

Wyoming produces close to 40 percent of the nation's coal, and the state's many climate-change skeptics include Gov. Matt Mead.

Two of the six initial projects that will run on the supercomputer, nicknamed “Cheyenne,” will be led by University of Wyoming researchers, according to a UW news release.

The University of Wyoming now has a second lightning-quick computer for researchers to use.
