Laramie History

The Nuclear Family Statue (or more formally known as the Russin Family Statue), which occupies the most central location on campus, may be finding a new home this fall. ASUW President Megan Degenfelder and ASUW Vice-President Ty McNamee have proposed replacing the Nuclear Family Statue with a new statue that embodies more of the UW campus feel, tradition, and pride.

Whether you know it or not, Laramie is dotted with various statues. They often go unnoticed, hidden beneath tall pines or sandstone buildings. They stand strong and tall, impenetrable to the cold Wyoming weather that so many of us complain about. While we may not notice these permanent fixtures even if we walk past them every day, they each have a story to tell and a reason behind their creation.

Buoyed by the excitement of what they discovered about their neighborhood while participating in a U.W. American Studies class project last Spring, West Side residents Gina Chavez and Wendi Chatman decided to form a new community group, the West Side League of Neighbors (WSLN). The group hopes to encourage West Side residents, property owners, businesses and other entities to recognize the neighborhood’s uniqueness and historic significance and foster a desire to appropriately update their properties while preserving their historic character.

One of the reasons I enjoy living in Laramie is the diverse range of cultural activities. There’s little doubt that I wouldn’t be able to find so many different people from so many different places anywhere but a small college town; speaking of culture and art, Laramie is blessed with some really top notch museums many thanks to the University of Wyoming and others. Here is a quick look at some of the best museums Laramie has to offer.

As many proclaim, it might be the bussiest time of year, but it is also a time when everyone in the community seems to take a little extra time to thank those around them. The Museum at the Ivinson Mansion is no exception as they have a big holiday open house planned for this upcomming weekend, December 10th to 11th.
