Wyoming State Representative Chuck Gray, one of the candidates hoping to replace Liz Cheney in the Senate, said that it's "great news" that the Texas Heartbeat Bill went into effect.
A Texas law that bans most abortions has providers and advocates preparing for an increasing number of women traveling to other states to end their pregnancies.
The Texas law, which was signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in May and took effect at midnight, would prohibit abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around six weeks and before most women even know they’re pregnant.
Abbott has staunchly opposed mask mandates for public schools and this week saw defiant districts in some of the state’s largest cities — which are run by Democrats — require face coverings anyway.
Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has already threatened Democrats with arrest once they return home, which may not be until the current 30-day session is over.
