A six-year-old student was struck and severely injured by a school bus in Sheridan Monday afternoon.

According to a Sheridan Police Department statement, the child was struck at Coffeen Elementary School in Sheridan just after 3 p.m.

Officers arrived to find the child laying directly in front of the passenger-side rear tires of the school bus. Witnesses told police that the child ran to the side of the bus as it was leaving the school in an attempt to stop the driver before being pulled beneath the bus.

The child was being transported by air to Aurora Children's Hospital in Colorado with life-threatening injuries. The names of the child and others involved in the incident are not being released due to the investigation still being active.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation. Sheridan Fire and Rescue along with Rocky Mountain Ambulance also responded to the scene.
