Where were you 6 years ago during Easter Break? I can remember only because my oldest son was 2 years old and we went down to Key West to visit our friends that have a family house by the old cemetery. The island of Key West is only 1 mile long and 4 miles wide.  You can walk pretty much anywhere you want in 15-20 minutes.  We did the normal touristy vacation stuff; toured Hemingway’s house, had a cheeseburger at Jimmy Buffet’s original Margaritaville, and watched the sun set on Malory Square. The last day we where there, my friend and I found the coolest bar in the world (well at least in Key West). The Schooner Warf Bar is right on the bay and has tall schooner ships anchored on the walkway just feet from the open-air bar. Crushed conch shells make up the floor, and the umbrellas on the tables are adorned with palm fronds.  They have great seafood and even a menu for your dog.

My friend and I enjoyed the smell of the ocean, the sounds of people on vacation and a really cool character signing in the background. Michael McCloud is the stage name of Michael Snyder, an American folk singer and songwriter who regularly performs at the Schooner Wharf Bar in Key West, Florida. His album, “Aint Life Grand ” features the lead guitar playing of the late “Doctor” George Turner. He gained national attention after filing a formal complaint for copyright infringement against country music star Toby Keith in 2006. McCloud claims that Keith’s 2003 hit song I Love This Bar “…was copied largely from (McCloud’s) work, Tourist Town Bar.”

We enjoyed our last day on the southernmost point of the continental United States (mile marker 1) listening to McCloud and enjoying a cold beer and fish and chips. I have to only think about that day, or hear McCloud singing to escape from daily worries and stress.  Music has the power to take us there.  Now I have a puppy named Schooner, and some day I will take him to Key West and he can order from the menu.
