Reckless Longmont ATV Driver Displays Rifle, Causes Accident
On the evening of September 11, multiple residents in southwest Longmont received a reverse 9-1-1 alert from police, notifying them about an incident taking place in the area.
At approximately 6:45 p.m., Longmont police received reports of an adult male, driving recklessly on an ATV in the area of South Hover Street and Nelson Road. He then proceeded to drive recklessly through the King Soopers and Target parking lots, before abandoning the ATV. During this time, his driving was responsible for at least one accident. The man on the ATV was also pointing a rifle at passing motorists but did not fire any shots. However, the craziness didn't end there.
Upon ditching the ATV, the man then attempted to steal a UPS delivery truck by pointing his rifle at the driver, but was unsuccessful.
Following that, the man then unlawfully entered a residence on Schlagel Street. Inside the home, he took off his clothes and changed into an outfit he found there. It was at this time that the alert was sent out to nearby residents, informing them that the possibly armed male may be in their area, committing crimes and eluding police.
With the assistance of members from the Boulder County Sheriff Department and Colorado State Patrol, officers searched the area for the suspect until about 9:30 p.m..
Just before midnight on September 11, a member of the cleaning crew at a bank, located in the 900 block of South Hover Street, called police to inform them that he found a man illegally inside of the building. Police responded to the scene and arrested a 21-year-old transient male, identified as Augustus Cropp. Officers determined Cropp was also the man associated with the other incidents that took place that day near the same area.
Cropp was charged with several crimes including menacing, attempted motor vehicle theft, second degree burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, and arrest warrants from two jurisdictions. He booked into the Boulder County Jail.
Upon investigation, it was later learned that Cropp was carrying and threatening people with a BB rifle, not a true firearm. Police are continuing to work this case.
