Thanks to the shameful behavior of some so-called adults, the Torrington Trailblazers will get a police escort to War Memorial Stadium for today's Wyoming 3A Football Championship.

Last week's Semifinal between Torrington and Jackson was a game for the ages. Both teams should be proud of the way they played. The ugly aftermath of the controversial finish is a sad reminder that some things are more important than a game.

Following Torrington's last-second 22-21 win, one Jackson parent had to be restrained from physically attacking an official. Another parent challenged an official to fight in the parking lot. Commentary on social media this week has also been equally shameful. One Jackson supporter threatened to drive to Laramie to heckle the Torrington players.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Adults threatening to heckle high school students. These aren't professional or college athletes, they're kids, playing purely for the love of the game.

The media has fueled the controversy. A column in the Jackson Hole News and Guide alleged that "Jackson Got Robbed" and implied that the officials and timekeepers conspired to cheat. A low-rent sports talk show in Cheyenne called the game "the Torrington Screwjob". Their host apologized for the inflammatory comments the following day.

But the damage has already been done.

Wyoming has a shortage of officials for high school sports. Many of them drive for hours, volunteer their time, and make personal sacrifices, all to help teach students valuable lessons about teamwork and sportsmanship. And for their effort, this is what they get; threats and criticism from parents who should be ashamed of their behavior.
