Poll: Three Of Wyoming’s Neighbors Have legalized Pot, Should We?

Two more of Wyoming's neighboring states on election day voted to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Montana and South Dakota voters approved measures legalizing weed, joining Colorado among the Cowboy State's neighbors who have voted in favor of pot legalization proposals. In Wyoming's other three neighboring states--Idaho, Utah, and Nebraska--laws banning the use of marijuana are still on the books.

So is it time for Wyoming to take another look at the issue of legalizing pot? While several bills to do so have been introduced in the state legislature in recent years, none has so far been approved.

Supporters argue that taxing pot would help boost state revenues at a time when the state faces major budget challenges. They also argue that pot is far less dangerous than alcohol and that there are no valid scientific reasons for spending law enforcement resources enforcing outdated pot laws. Some supporters of legal weed say changing the current law would free up resources for fighting truly dangerous drugs like meth and heroin.

But opponents argue that legalizing weed will bring an influx of homeless people and crime to the state, which they say has happened in Colorado. They also say that with Wyoming's small population, any boost in pot-generated tax revenues would be insignificant. They also worry about the issue of stoned drivers on state streets and highways.
