Pentagon Tests Long-Banned Ballistic Missile Over Pacific
The Pentagon says it conducted a flight test Thursday of a missile that had been banned under a treaty the United States and Russia abandoned last summer.
The missile was a prototype and was configured to be armed with a non-nuclear warhead.
It was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
The Pentagon says the missile landed in the open ocean, but it's not disclosing the missile's range.
The testing program is intended to develop a missile that could be deployed in the Asia-Pacific region and potentially target China.
Congress hasn't authorized deploying such a missile.
