One Dead in Rollover Crash on Slick I-80 in Southern Wyoming
A 37-year-old South Dakota man died Thursday after the vehicle in which he was riding rolled on a slick stretch of Interstate 80 west of Lyman.
Theodore Earring was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene, according to a statement Friday from Sgt. Jeremy Beck of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Earring had been a passenger in the back seat of an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet Silverado when it drifted off the left side of the roadway and rolled shortly before 12:30 p.m.
The driver, 51-year-old Alfonso Ortiz of Victorville, California, was injured and taken to Evanston Regional Hospital for treatment. Also transported to the hospital for treatment was 40-year-old Julio Hernandez, also a resident of Victorville. They were both wearing their seatbelts.
The Patrol is investigating the possibility that Ortiz may have been driving too fast for the slick road conditions.
Earring was the 15th person to die on Wyoming highways thus far in 2019. That's compared with eight deaths by this point in 2018, nine in 2017 and six in 2016 to date.
