A Newcastle man died in a single-vehicle rollover crash early Wednesday, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Gilbert R. Maestas, 60, died after the sport utility vehicle in which he was a passenger left Wyoming Highway 450 about 32 miles west of Newcastle at 6:30 a.m., according to the news release from Patrol Sgt. David Wagener.

Maestas was a passenger in the rear seat of the SUV that was driven by Allen Holland, also of Newcastle. Two other passengers also were riding in the vehicle

The SUV was traveling westbound on a slight uphill left-hand curve when it lost traction on an ice-covered section of the road. It began to fishtail, left the highway and entered a ditch. The SUV spun, tripped and rolled.

Maestas was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and remained in the cab of the SUV during the rollover.

Maestas was taken by ground ambulance to Weston County Hospital in Newcastle where he died.

Holland, who was buckled in, and the other passengers, also from Newcastle, were taken by ground ambulance to the hospital for their injuries. One of those passengers was wearing a seat belt, while the other was not.

The Highway Patrol is investigating road conditions including black ice, use of cruise control on poor road conditions, and lack of seat belt use as contributing factors in this crash.

Maestas marked the eighth highway fatality in Wyoming for 2016. There were 12 fatalities during this same time period in 2015.
