Out and about this 4th of July weekend chances are that one of the essentials everyone had with them was a can of bug spray to fend off the ferocious masses of mosquitos that Laramie is currently experiencing. This comes as no suprise with all the standing water as a result of recent flooding of the Laramie river. Earlier this morning the City of Laramie announced that they will be applying an aerial application of Malathion to outlying areas of the City of Laramie on the morning of July 7th.

This application is targeted at a new generation of mosquitos (Culex tarsalis) that can transmit the West Nile Virus. There are currently no cases of the West Nile Virus reported for Albany County and the risk is currently at the lowest possible level; remote. The city has planned this application for the following three areas:

North of the city limits between Welsh Lane and 45th street including the area of the city wastewater treatment plant and the city landfill; west of the city limits between the Big Laramie River on the south, Interstate 80 on the north and the Laramie Regional Airport on the west including the Laramie Country Club; the third area is southwest of the city limits along Highway 230 and the Big Laramie River drainage from the city limits southwest approximately nine (9) miles.
