It has been over fifteen years since Laramie was shaken by the murder of Matthew Shepard.

The openly gay University of Wyoming student was tortured and murdered the night of October 6, 1998.  He died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado on October 12th due to severe head injuries.

In 2009 Matthew's mother Judy Shepard wrote a book The Meaning of Matthew: My Son's Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed.  United States Congress passed the "Matthew Shepart Hate Crimes Prevention Act in late 2009 signed by President Barack Obama.

In 2014 the Matthew Shepard Foundation continues to strongly support the LGBT community in Wyoming, the United States, and globally. Their mission is to spread anti-hate crime messages.

Executive Director Jason Marsden says:

Every day the Matthew Shepard Foundation continues our work to replace hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance.  Not a day goes by without a phone call or email coming to us asking for help. Students, teachers, parents, reporters, and people from all walks of life continue to reach out the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

Representatives from the Matthew Shepard Foundation traveled across the globe in 2013 and have presented a recap from their year here.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation has over 86,000 Facebook likes.
