It’s the final weekend of non-conference basketball action for Laramie High School Friday and Saturday, as they host a pair of doubleheaders.

Laramie will take on Rock Springs tonight before facing Green River tomorrow.

Laramie Lady Plainsmen

The fourth-ranked Laramie Lady Plainsmen face two good tests. Laramie (7-2) has a ranked showdown with No. 3 Rock Springs, who is 7-0 on the season. Then it’s Green River, who is off to a 5-2 start. They will visit the Gem City after playing at Cheyenne South today.

Lady Plainsmen head coach Laura Pollard feels the game against the Tigers will absolutely be their toughest test to this point.

“Nothing with Sidney (NE) or Chase County (NE), because naturally they’re very good ball clubs, but that was the point where the expectations I thought we all knew and had, were not there yet. The good part of that is we came back and buckled down. The girls work real hard in practice, but they still have to have that same focus in the game, though.”

Rock Springs leads 4A in scoring and rebounding, while Green River is fifth in scoring and second in rebounding. Laramie is 4A’s top defensive team allowing only 32.9 points per game.

Tonight’s game against the Tigers starts at 5:30 p.m. Tomorrow’s match-up with the Wolves is at 1 p.m.

Laramie Plainsmen

The Plainsmen have the same two foes on their slate. Laramie (3-6) takes on No. 5 Rock Springs, who is 3-4 on the season, and then a Wolves’ squad that is 4-3 coming into the weekend.

Plainsmen head coach Travis Brown feels his team is heading in the right direction.

“I think we’ve seen progress every week, and hopefully we continue to show that and finish strong here in pre-season.”

Green River and Rock Springs ranked second and third, respectively, in scoring, while all three teams are near the bottom of 4A in defense. That’s been an emphasis with LHS.

Brown adds, “One thing we’ve been focusing on is defense, always. I don’t think we have an issue scoring. I think the issue comes down to can we stop other teams from scoring?”

These games also pit the top three rebounding teams in 4A against each other.

Today’s game versus Rock Springs starts at 7 p.m., while Saturday against Green River will begin at 11:30 a.m.

KOWB (AM 1290) will broadcast all four games this weekend. David Settle and VerDon Hoopes will call all the action. Friday’s coverage will start at 4:45 p.m. Saturday’s will commence at 10:45 a.m.
