The weather has prompted a change in the Laramie Rangers legion baseball schedule with the home opener moved from Wednesday to Tuesday.

Laramie (0-7) will play tonight at Cowboy Field versus Cheyenne Post 6, as they try to beat the snow in the forecast for tomorrow.

Rangers’ manager Aaron Lozano made the decision to switch the date midday Monday. Laramie was set to host Post 6 in a doubleheader, May 8. Now, they’ll play a single, 9-inning game tonight at 6 p.m.

Still in search of their first win this season, Lozano admits it’s not fun to be sitting at 0-7.

“I think everybody’s a little bit frustrated, players, coaches, and parents. Nobody wants to be in this position. We actually went back and looked at some of the things we’re doing, different challenges for the players, and made some adjustments moving forward. Everybody’s still upbeat and positive. I think we’re still a competitive team, but, you know, a rough start, for sure, and hoping to fix that in the near future.”

Weather still could play a factor in Tuesday’s home debut versus Cheyenne Post 6. There is a chance for rain showers and a breeze at 20-to-30 miles per hour out of the south-southeast creating colder wind chill temperatures.

Lozano added, “The challenge is preventing injuries, right, when it’s cold out. That’s another thing that’s contributed to a 0-7 start. Reston Morehouse has not been able to play yet, Ben Ruckman’s down, Caleb Eaton’s not 100 percent, and Baden Jordan hasn’t really played. In a cold game, we’re prone to more of that, pulled muscles, things like that, so keeping guys loose, making sure they’re properly stretched and warmed up, and continuing that throughout the game.”

Asked to characterize what he’s seen from his team in the seven games from pitching to defense to hitting, Lozano feels like they’re still in pre-season form.

“We ran into a Gillette team that had played 20 games already. They’re probably closer to actual season form, maybe even mid-season form. I’d say we’re still the preseason aspect. The weather has prevented us from getting outside a lot. We’ve spent a lot of time in cages around town. We’re getting hacks in, and that’s good. It’s better than doing nothing, but there’s nothing quite like being out on the ball field.”

The Rangers will face Post 6 for a second time. They lost in Cheyenne on April 19 in the Laramie’s season debut, 15-1.

Lozano expects more of the same from Post 6 in this second meeting.

“Cheyenne’s a ballclub that is always going to capitalize on walks and mistakes. We have to have low pitch counts in our innings. We have to make the routine plays on defense. We have to have timely hitting. I think the first time out, hitting’s not going to be the greatest in your first game, but we’ve seen a lot of positive things the last couple of weekends with these guys hitting the ball. I think our offense will be better (compared to the first meeting).”

KOWB (AM 1290) will broadcast the game tonight from Cowboy Field. David Settle will call the action with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m. You can listen on the radio, through the KOWB app, online, or any Amazon Alexa-enabled device or Google Home device.
