The Laramie Plainsmen swimming and diving team claimed the Southern Wyoming Athletic Conference championship Saturday in Evanston, WY after two days of competition.

Laramie finished with 280 team points to end up on top of the team standings. Cheyenne Central was second with 254 points. Cheyenne East was third, followed by Rock Springs, Green River and Evanston.

The Plainsmen took the team title despite winning just two events. Senior Slade Sheaffer won the 100 backstroke, and Laramie won the 200 freestyle relay.

Laramie head coach Tom Hudson said, "We just have an awful lot of team depth. We were able to place one or two guys in the top six of most events, and at least one or two guys in almost every consolation final. We just had a lot more depth than all the other teams. So, it was just a good, overall team victory."

The Plainsmen had several other top three finishes. They included a second place from Nick Mavriplis in the 100 butterfly and Adrian Barberis in the 100 breaststroke. Third place showings came from Nick Hudson in diving and Danny Radosevich in the 100 backstroke, as well as both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Laramie also picked up two more state qualifiers. Sophomore Zach Shannon made it in the 50 freestyle, and junior Treyven Armijo got his time in the 100 backstroke. That gives them 16 on the season.

Indoor Track & Field

In other Olympic sports news, the Laramie High School indoor track team sent 21 individuals to the Simplot Games in Pocatello, ID last weekend. The top finish came from Jonah Henry, who was fifth place in the 3200 meter run.
