The clock is ticking down towards the start of the 2014 Laramie Plainsmen high school football season.

They open in eight days, August 29, in Sheridan against the fourth-ranked Broncs.

Second-year head coach Chuck Syverson said that practice has been a lot smoother this time around than last year.

“A lot of these kids were out last year, either at the junior high or the high school level, so a lot of it was repetitive for them. Some had been here for both of our camps this summer, so that was pretty beneficial to a lot of those guys.”

Senior Treyven Armijo, who is competing for the starting quarterback position, characterized the start to camp by saying it was full of passion.

“I think we had a lot more intensity this year.  We’re looking a lot more focused and not messing around; trying to get the job done this year.”

As for preparing for the first game at Sheridan, senior Colton Wostenberg said it’s all about the basics.

“I would say we need to focus on fundamentals; all fundamentals; the rest will come.”

Syverson alluded to the benefits he’s seen early on have been in their conditioning and overall team comradery.

“Just a little better cohesiveness, I guess, offensively on a lot of our plays… so they’re off to a pretty good start there. (We’re) Just working on our depth, and seeing where everybody’s at, and trying to fit the pieces to the puzzle together.”

Laramie has gone through 15 practices up to this point. They will be holding a game-type, situational scrimmage on Saturday at Deti Stadium.
