Laramie High School Tennis Competes At State Championships
The 2014 Wyoming High School State Tennis Championships are going on in Gillette.
There are sixteen teams and over 200 student-athletes vying for team and individual state titles. One of those squads is from Laramie High School.
The Plainsmen are the defending State Champions, while the Lady Plainsmen were runner-up a year ago.
Laramie head coach Carlos Mellizo says at this stage of the game,
"It's about belief. It's about just knowing that when we step out on the court, that we have what it takes to be competitive, regardless of whoever our opponent might be... we have to believe that we can hang with those guys, and in fact that we can beat them, because we can."
Robin Drummond and Dalton Bainer are playing singles for the LHS boys. The doubles teams are Andrew Barnes and Matt Moran, Nick Hudson and Kael Lundberg and Ky Fike and Miles Stump.
Representing the LHS girls are Lucia Cho and Lea Bergman in singles play. Jordan Mecca and Megan Scott, plus Carolina Chong and McKenna Klinger and Grace Kirk and Emily Schaneman comprise the three doubles tandems.
The Plainsmen lead the team standings. They scored 13.5 team points Thursday. Drummond and Bainer have both made the semifinals in their singles draw. Also, the number one and two doubles teams of Barnes/Moran and Hudson/Lundberg advanced to the semis. Fike and Stump won their opening match, but lost in round two and fall into the consolation portion of the draw.
It was not as successful of a day for the Lady Plainsmen. They sit in seventh place with seven points. After a first round bye, Cho won her only match of the day to advance to the semis on Friday. Bergman lost her opening match in three sets, but bounced back with a win in the consolation bracket. That is the same story for the number one and doubles teams of Mecca/Scott and Chong/Klinger. The bad news came at number three doubles, where Kirk/Schaneman lost their two matches and are done.
