The Plainsmen cross country team highlighted the Laramie High School Olympic sports weekend with a victory at the 37th annual Liberty Bell Cross Country Invitational.

Cross Country

Behind junior Chris Henry’s victory in the Division 3 Boys A race, the LHS boys posted a team score of 79 points to win their division out of a total of 21 teams. Henry’s winning time was 15:37. Laramie’s top five runners all finished in the top 25. The Plainsmen haven’t lost a team race since Pat Amato Classic in 2012.

Head coach Greg Schabron said,

“The boys depth is just amazing… that strength from position six to nine on both the girls and guys side has kind of elevated the performance of everybody on the team.”

The Laramie girls finished sixth out of 21 squads in the same division. Senior Ella DeWolf was the top individual for LHS. She finished in ninth place. Sophomore Maria Smith-Lopez wasn’t far behind in 13th place.

To top off the great effort in Colorado, both JV teams won their division, and that included a nearly perfect score from the JV boys.

Swimming and Diving

The Laramie High School girls swimming and diving team earned a pair of dual wins last Friday, and then they ended up second at the Cheyenne South Invitational.

Laramie won six events in a double dual sweep of Sheridan and Green River last Friday at the Laramie Community Recreation Center. They defeated Sheridan 102-82 and Green River 128-56. Senior Delta Burchi won the 50 and 100 freestyle races. The Lady Plainsmen are 4-1 in duals this season.

Saturday in the Capital City, LHS was second out of 11 teams in the field behind only Gillette (439). Laramie scored 379 points. The only event win came from junior Ryleigh Kobbe, who remains undefeated on the diving board. The 200 medley relay finished in second place.

Laramie will host Cheyenne Central at the Laramie Community Recreation Center for a dual today at 5 p.m.

Volleyball

The Lady Plainsmen opened play in the 4A East Conference last Friday and Saturday at home.

Both matches, against Sheridan and Gillette, went five sets, but Laramie lost both. They actually won the opening two sets in each match, but dropped the final three. The score of the fifth set last Friday versus Sheridan was 9-15, while last Saturday was 17-19 to Gillette.

Head coach Jill Stucky said, “This weekend we competed so hard. Games one and two have been really good for us, and then we’ve struggled a little bit in games three and four.”

Laramie is now 3-11 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

Tennis

Both Laramie High School tennis teams posted a 1-2 record in three road duals at Gillette and Sheridan.

Last Friday in Gillette, both squads defeated Riverton; the boys 4-1 and the girls 5-0; but lost to the host Camels, each 4-1. Then on Saturday, both teams fell at Sheridan to the Broncs. The boys score was 3-2, while the ladies were 5-0.

Dalton Bainer was 2-1 in singles action, as were the tandems of Andrew Barnes and Matt Moran at number one doubles and Kael Lundberg and Ky Fike at number two doubles. Number one singles player Lucia Cho was the only Lady Plainsmen to post a 2-1 record.

Scores of yesterday’s postponed conference duals against Cheyenne Central and Cheyenne South were unavailable.

Golf

The Casper Invite at Three Crowns Golf Club was shortened to 18 holes last Friday due to weather.

The Plainsmen finished in third place behind Riverton (305) and Cheyenne Central (319). The LHS boys posted a team score of 322. Senior John Murdock IV was fourth with a 75, while Eli Bryant tied for fifth with a 77.

The Laramie girls did not post a team score. The top individual was Ali Stark, who tied for 17th.
