Kimbrough Joins Edwards Cowboy Basketball Staff

New Wyoming men’s basketball head coach Allen Edwards added to his coaching staff with the hiring of James Kimbrough as an assistant coach Thursday.

Edwards stated in a university release that he wanted to find an all-around coach.

“I didn’t want a coach that specialized in one particular thing. I wanted a guy that’s good on the floor, good with student-athletes, good with recruiting and good with scouting. I think Jermaine has shown the capability to excel in all those areas, so we are excited to welcome him to the Cowboy basketball family.”

Kimbrough spent last season at Mountain West foe Nevada. He helped the Wolfpack to a 24-14 overall record. They went 10-8, good for fourth in the MW. Nevada accepted a bid to the CBI and won the tournament. That’s the first MW post-season title in men’s basketball.

From the UW release, Kimbrough said he’s excited about a promising opportunity.

“I feel like everything is in place for the Cowboys to compete for championships year after year. I look forward to getting started right away with the student-athletes and staff.”

Prior to his stint in Reno, Kimbrough was an assistant coach at Cleveland State for nine years. He helped the Vikings to a pair of Horizon League titles, an NCAA Tournament appearance, three trips to the NIT and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Kimbrough has also spend time as a coach at Howard College in the JUCO ranks, UMass and IPFW. He played for two seasons at St. Catherine College and then transferred to Virginia Tech, where Kimbrough played two seasons, from 1998-2000.

Kimbrough and his wife, Tameka, have five children.
