Two people were busted for drugs earlier this month after running out of gas on Interstate 80 in Sweetwater County, the Wyoming Highway Patrol announced Tuesday.

Sgt. Jeremy Beck says it happened on the evening of Saturday, April 8, near mile marker 133, about 30 miles east of Rock Springs.

Beck says a trooper had stopped to help and was speaking with the car's lone occupant, a female from California, when he smelled the odor of raw marijuana coming from the car.

"The trooper became more suspicious when the occupant relayed implausible information about the travel plans," Beck said in a news release.

Beck says a short while later, a male from Iowa walked out of the ditch and approached the car and trooper.

Beck says the male claimed he was not associated with the car but could not provide a reasonable explanation as to why he was so far out in the middle of nowhere.

"The trooper detained both parties, and a drug detection WHP K-9 (Becky) was deployed around the vehicle, giving a positive alert and confirming that a controlled substance was present," said Beck.

Beck says a search was conducted, and 13 Ziploc baggies of suspected methamphetamine weighing approximately 11.5 pounds, 3.7 pounds of suspected marijuana, two THC vape cartridges, one pack of edibles, 37 Adderall pills, 2,186 fentanyl M30 pills weighing approximately 185.3 grams, and two stolen pistols were found in the car.

"Through the investigation, it was learned both parties were traveling together," said Beck.

"They were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance plant form, controlled substance crystal form, controlled substance fentanyl, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and possession of the stolen property," he added.
