Firefighters Called Out To Battle Blaze From Laramie County Gas Line Rupture

UPDATE: Laramie County Fire District 10 has released a statement on the blaze that includes additional details.

September 21, 2025, 1:08 a.m. — Laramie County Fire District 10 responded early this morning to reports of a large fire near mile marker 350 on Interstate 80.
Upon arrival and after receiving updated information, crews confirmed the incident involved a Union Pacific Railroad train and a ruptured natural gas pipeline. Initial reports suggested a locomotive fire, with multiple callers describing explosions and flames visible from as far as 60 miles away.
The ruptured pipeline ignited in close proximity to rail cars carrying hazardous materials, placing responders and the surrounding area at heightened risk. A multi-agency response was immediately launched, with assistance from:
Laramie County Fire Authority
Cheyenne Fire and Rescue
Laramie County Fire District 1
Laramie County Emergency Management
Through rapid and coordinated efforts, the fire was brought under control. The flames have been extinguished, with only isolated smoldering and cleanup operations remaining. Importantly, no injuries or fatalities occurred, and no large hazardous material releases posed a threat to the public.

Union Pacific Reports No Injuries

Kristin South of Union Pacific gave Townsquare Media the following statement this morning:

"Around 2 a.m. CT, a Union Pacific train was southwest of Cheyenne, when it stopped due to a rupture in the Kinder Morgan pipeline, about 40 feet away. The heat from the fire made it too dangerous to operate over the track. There was no derailment and no one was hurt. We are working with the local fire department and will inspect the track to determine if any repairs are necessary, once firefighters give the all clear"

Cheyenne Fire Rescue Statement On Fire

Cheyenne Fire Rescue posted the following on their Facebook page:

''CFR is currently on the scene of a train fire incident, alongside several Laramie County Fire Districts. While no evacuation orders have been issued, firefighters are vigilantly monitoring the situation and working closely with Union Pacific representatives. Additional details will be provided shortly.
Update: CFR personnel representing Wyoming Regional Response Team #7 (hazamt) remain on scene with representatives of Union Pacific and Laramie County Fire Districts. There is currently no threat to the public and there are no road closures. Union Pacific and/or Laramie County Fire Authority will be releasing any further information. This incident will remain under investigation through local, state and federal agencies.

The event aimed to spark interest in aviation and highlight the need for pilots, featuring aerial performances and aviation displays. 

WOW, what a show it was.

The point of these airshows is to help bring Cheyenne's old terminal back as something new. It might take about $10 million to do it.

Imagine it having a restaurant, retail stores, and a place for private pilots to visit from around the country.
