Cheyenne Man Charged With Manslaughter in Fatal Stabbing

A 43-year-old Cheyenne man has been charged with voluntary manslaughter following last Thursday's fatal stabbing in south Cheyenne.

Deputies Called to Stabbing

According to the Laramie County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the 2000 block of Mary Way at 7:27 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12 for a physical domestic with a knife.

The Sheriff's Office says the suspect, Joseph A. Gish, was in a physical altercation with another Cheyenne man inside a trailer and was armed with a four-inch folding pocket knife.

They say during the altercation, Gish stabbed the victim in the left chest and cut near the victim's armpit.

The victim was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Gish Claims Self-Defense

Gish was taken to the Sheriff's Office and interviewed and claimed to have used the knife in self-defense.

Gish reportedly told a detective sergeant that he didn't intentionally stab the victim but felt threatened by the victim as a threat to him and his daughter's life.

The detective sergeant says Gish didn't sustain any visible injuries during the incident.

Gish Charged With Voluntary Manslaughter

Gish was arrested and subsequently charged with voluntary manslaughter, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Bond Set at $20K Cash

Gish made his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Monday, Dec. 16, during which his bond was set at $20,000 cash and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for next Monday, Dec. 23 at 3 p.m.
