Cheyenne NWS: Greatest Tornado Risk Area Includes Cheyenne

The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service is continuing to warn of severe storms in SE Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle.

The update includes a risk for tornadoes in an area of southeast Wyoming, with the area of the greatest risk in an area that includes Cheyenne.

The agency posted the following map:

11:15 AM MDT Wednesday, June 21 -- An outbreak of severe thunderstorms is becoming more likely across the high plains of southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle this afternoon through late tonight. Thunderstorms will initially develop after 2 PM along or in the vicinity of the higher terrain along the Laramie Range, intensifying rapidly and increasing in coverage as they track to the east later in the afternoon and evening. The strongest storms are expected over southeast Wyoming during the late afternoon and early evening, with the bulk of activity expected for western Nebraska after 6 PM. Environmental conditions are extremely favorable for numerous severe storms, some of which could be significant with potential for very large, destructive hail (strongest storms capable of baseball sized hail or larger), damaging winds, localized flooding, and even a few tornadoes as well. The greatest tornado risk will be maximized over far southeast Wyoming from Wheatland to Cheyenne, eastward toward Pine Bluffs and Torrington; however, isolated tornadoes will be possible for all areas highlighted. An Enhanced Risk for Severe Thunderstorms (Level 3 out of 5) has been posted by the Storm Prediction Center! Stay weather aware today and tonight.
