Cheyenne Animal Shelter Saves Three Amazing Axolotls From Neglect
We all know what to expect at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
Cats, dogs, maybe a hamster or two.
Some birds as well.
But how about an amphibian that can grow back body parts in ways science still can't explain?
Creatures That Can Do Something Science Can't Explain
We are talking about salamanders that according to the Natural History Museum of the UK "have the remarkable ability to regenerate parts of their bodies. This includes limbs, eyes and even parts of their brains. Research labs around the world are trying to understand this incredible trait.".
That would be the axolotl, one of the most unusual creatures on the face of the earth. These amphibians are like tadpoles who never grow up and leave the water. The are also extremely rare, only being found in a few lakes in Mexico.
In fact they are so rare that they are listed as "critically endangered" according to the IUCN Red List.
So how did three of these strange creatures end up at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter?
Well, according to a post on the CAS Facebook page, someone left the amphibious trio abandoned in a local home.
According to the post "Their water was cloudy and filled with debris, the tank coated in grime, and the only “food” left behind was no longer edible. Abandoned and forgotten, these delicate creatures were in desperate need of help."
But the good news is that Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah (as they have been named) are doing much better now, living in a clean, spacious tank and awaiting transfer to the Reptile and Amphibian Center of the Rockies for specialized care.
After that they will be adopted out to forever homes to spend their time doing what axolotls do.
