Wyoming Statewide Air Quality Alert For Friday
An Air Quality Alert for wildfire smoke is in effect for all of Wyoming as of September 5, 2025.
A specific alert expired at midnight on September 5, but hazy skies and poor air quality conditions are expected to continue.
Expect haze and some improving conditions as we move through Saturday and Sunday. But we will still have to deal with some haze.
The smoke is primarily from Canadian wildfires, with a cold front pushing the smoke down to the surface, impacting air quality and visibility.
This means improved conditions for the weekend as a cool front moves through the area.
The smoke is primarily from wildfires in western Wyoming and neighboring states, which is being dragged toward the surface by a cool front moving across the state.
The air quality alert was issued by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality and the Wyoming Department of Health. It is in effect until at least midnight on September 6.
Gusty north winds up to 40 mph are expected to decrease by Saturday, but this will bring smoke from higher altitudes closer to the ground.
Several fires in western Wyoming are contributing to the smoke, such as the Dollar Lake Fire, which is in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, north of Pinedale. As of September 4, 2025, it was over 15,000 acres and 31% contained.
The Willow Creek Fire: Located south of Smoot, this fire is over 4,000 acres and 43% contained as of September 4.
The forecast for this weekend falls under the "Fair" category. This means air quality is generally acceptable, but sensitive groups may experience minor to moderate symptoms.
