It is a busy week for Laramie High School and Rock River student-athletes, as the 2024 fall sports season begins for six teams. LHS golf and tennis have participated in multiple events in the first couple of weeks of the season. KOWB has a recap of last week’s action. Football, volleyball, cross-country, and girls swimming and diving start this week. Here is what’s going on.

LHS Tennis

The Laramie teams opened their season on Aug. 19. The girls’ squad has gone 3-2 in their first five dual matches. They lost at home to Kelly Walsh (5-0) and Natrona County (3-2). They beat Sheridan 3-2 and Rawlins 4-1 at home. On Monday, the Laramie girls defeated South 4-1 in Cheyenne.

The boys’ team got rained out against Kelly Walsh when the match was 1-1. They beat Natrona County 4-1, lost to Sheridan 4-1, beat Rawlins 5-0, and won at South 5-0. Paulo Mellizo went 5-0 at No. 1 singles.

Laramie plays at Cheyenne Central on Thursday.

LHS Golf

Laramie played at the Wheatland Invite last Thursday and Friday. The Plainsmen took second place. Griffin Stender was the top finisher in eighth place. The Lady Plainsmen were third in the team standings. Addie Plassmeyer took tenth. They are at the Rock Springs Invite on Thursday and Friday.

LHS Volleyball

No. 1 ranked Laramie opens the season at the Cheyenne Volleyball Invitational. They will play five matches on Friday and Saturday. LHS faces No. 2 Kelly Walsh at 1 p.m. on Friday at East High School, Green River at 4 p.m. at Central High School, and 3A Rawlins at 6 p.m. at South High School. On Saturday, they play Riverton at 9 a.m. at Central High School and No. 5 Star Valley at 1 p.m. at East High School.

Rock River Volleyball

The Longhorns make their debut under new head coach Lydia Moore at the Dogger Invitational in Lingle on Friday. They open with a conference match against No. 5 Lingle-Ft. Laramie at 8:30 a.m. in the high school gym. They will also play No. 3 Upton, Arvada-Clearmont, and Hulett.

LHS and Rock River Cross-Country

The season starts on Friday at the UW Invite in Cheyenne. The varsity girls race at 10 a.m. and the varsity boys race at 10:35 a.m. at Little America Resort.

LHS Girls Swimming & Diving

Laramie starts the 2024 season in Gillette. They swim at the Campbell County Aquatics Center in the Gillette Relays on Friday and the Gillette Pentathlon on Saturday.

LHS Football

Laramie begins the 2024 season at No. 2 Cheyenne East on Friday at 6 p.m. KOWB (AM 1290) will air the game starting at 5 p.m. with David Settle and Aaron Lozano calling the game.
