Laramie Soccer Has Sights Set on a Championship [VIDEO]
It's been eight years, but the Laramie Lady Plainsmen soccer team has a shot at a state championship this weekend at the 4A soccer state tournament in Rock Springs. Laramie is coming off the regular season and regional titles in the 4A East. They draw Natrona County in the first round at Rock Springs High School at 2 p.m.
LARAMIE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT PREVIEW 2024
Laramie is 12-3-1 on the season. NC enters the match at 6-7-4. These two last met at the state tournament last year in an elimination match on Day 2 of the state tournament. LHS won that game. Now, it's the first step toward what the Lady Plainsmen hope is a great weekend.
KOWB's David Settle spoke with seniors McKenna Barham and Chloe Whisenant to preview the state tournament. They discussed this being their last state tournament, some keys for the team on offense and defense, and facing Natrona County to start the state tournament.
Head coach Kim Whisenant says it took them a while to figure out their rhythm and who they were, but they are playing well entering this weekend.
"It's kind of like a well-oiled machine. We know what we're supposed to do on and off the field. We've prepared enough in the front end of the season that we know what it's supposed to look like now... They're feeling confident, and we have really good momentum rolling into this state weekend."
Whisenant knows that Natrona County will be a tough opponent, but they're focused on themselves.
"We're going to worry about ourselves more than the other team, but we did take a peak at Natrona and saw what they're all about. We need to stay within who we are and what we know. That's been giving us success up to this point."
LARAMIE'S WEEKEND OF MATCHES DEPENDS ON THE OUTCOME OF TODAY
Laramie will face either the winner or loser of the Kelly Walsh versus Campbell County first-round match on Friday. Their opponent and what time they play will be determined by the outcome of their match against Natrona County.
