The 2025 Wyoming High School Class 4A Golf State Championships are on Friday and Saturday in Cheyenne. The Laramie Plainsmen are considered contenders for the school’s second boys’ golf state title. After a runner-up finish at last week’s 4A East Qualifier in Sheridan, LHS will try to put together two good days of golf at the Airport Golf Course to see if it can get them to the top. Campbell County is the favorite to defend its boys’ team title, while Kelly Walsh could also be in the mix.

LARAMIE HIGH PLAYS AT THE 4A GOLF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Laramie has one win, three runner-up finishes, and a third-place finish through the five events this season. Their victory was at Riverton. The Plainsmen tied for second in Casper and took second in Gillette and Sheridan. Their third place was at Douglas. Seniors Carson Moniz, Griffin Stender, and Hoss Ackerman, plus sophomores Porter Stender and Brock Lehning, put LHS in the conversation.

Head coach Carlos Mellizo said he’s so proud of the kids.

“They’ve been working hard year-round. We have a number of kids who played tournaments throughout the summer, have taken lessons, and have just taken the game very seriously. I think our results reflect the commitment the kids have put into the game.”

As for their chances in Cheyenne this weekend, Mellizo believes the team aspect is critical.

“We need a strong performance from everyone. Campbell County is a great team. They are solid one through five, and that’s what we need to be, to be in contention.”

Moniz has been an all-state performer the last two years. He wants to go out on top. KOWB’s David Settle spoke to the senior leading into the state championships.

Mellizo told KOWB that Moniz needs to treat this as another tournament and play within himself.

Laramie has Two Girls Playing

Junior Addie Plassmeyer and freshman Abi Worley will tee it up for LHS. Plassmeyer comes off a third-place finish at last week’s qualifier in Sheridan. She shot an 84, which was the best competitive round of her prep career. This is Plassmeyer’s second trip to the state championships. Worley made the state field in her first high school season.

State Championship Venue

Mellizo likes the culminating event at the Airport Golf Course in Cheyenne. He says it sets up pretty well for the team.

“It’s a course that we’re familiar with. We have a number of kids who have been playing there all summer long. It has a couple of tricky holes that you have to have some strategy built around, but it also has a wide-open back nine that favors our big hitters. I think the kids feel confident and comfortable on that course.”

The golfers tee it up at 9 a.m. both days.
