The new prep football season starts with a stiff challenge for the Laramie Plainsmen, who host the No. 2 Cheyenne East Thunderbirds in the 2025 opener for both teams on Friday at Deti Stadium. The kick-off is at 6 p.m. Laramie went 2-8 last year and lost to state champion Sheridan in the first round of the playoffs. Cheyenne East was 9-3 and lost in the state title game for the third straight year. The game is a ‘Blackout,’ and Laramie is asking its fans to where black to the game.

LARAMIE PLAINSMEN FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW 2025

The Plainsmen are one of the most experienced teams in Class 4A with eight starters back on offense and seven returning on defense. Second-year head coach Jake Chick felt his team scratched the surface on competitiveness last year until some injuries set them back in key areas. Now, with a more mature and stronger team, he feels they can take the next step this fall. KOWB’s David Settle caught up with Coach Chick earlier this week to preview the 2025 season.

A couple of the veteran players who want to help the program make bigger strides this year are senior linemen Sam Harshberger and James Vasek. KOWB spoke to the duo this week about how practice has gone, what they’re looking forward to, trying to stay healthy, and some keys up front for LHS this season. That’s in the video at the top of the story.

The Week 0 opposition is the second-ranked East Thunderbirds. They return just four starters on offense and one on defense from last year’s runner-up squad. A few things you can be certain of are that East will have speed, athleticism, and its line play will be strong. Head Coach Chad Goff is a line coach by trade. They have a game-breaker in Keyshawn Brown, who led 4A in rushing last year with 1,255 yards and 13 TDs. He also had three return touchdowns. Kaenen Zowada will be their starting QB. He saw some limited action at the position a year ago after primarily being at receiver.

East has won 10 straight games against Laramie. Last year, the T-Birds pulled away in the second half for a 37-6 victory. That was the closest the Plainsmen have been since a pair of 16-point losses in 2018. The last LHS win was in 2016, 31-21.

KOWB will have live coverage of the season-opening game from Deti Stadium. David Settle and Dan Bleak will call the game. The broadcast starts at 5 p.m.
