We're just days away from Fall officially beginning. Monday, August 22, at 12:19 p.m., marks the day and time when the sun is aligned with the Earth's equator, resulting in nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness.

When this happens, you know it's time to start preparing your home for cold weather, bugs trying to move into your spare bedroom, and the fall decor to be in full effect. If the bugs part of that statement freaked you out a little, you shouldn't wait until the 22nd to start the anti-bug fight.

Experts recommend starting to check for gaps around doors, windows, siding, and foundations now. The temperatures are starting to cool at night, and bugs like ants and wasps are beginning to move in.

In another week or two, the spiders, beetles, and even nasty mice will start sneaking inside. It's recommended that by October 1, you should have things rock solid.

There are four common entry points that you should always check thoroughly to ensure they are correctly sealed so that bugs can't get inside.

  1. Check the seal around all exterior doors. If you can see light or feel air, bugs can get into that crack.
  2. Check your foundation for cracks. Tiny bugs like ants and spiders can use the cracks to get inside your house.
  3. Get an eye on all pipes and conduits leading into the house. That could be electrical wires, PVC piping, or gas lines.
  4. The fourth place you need to check is the exhaust vents in your bathroom and in the kitchen.
