Cowgirls Trek to Face San Jose State Wednesday Night

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team makes the trek out to California for Wednesday night contest against San Jose State. The Cowgirls and Spartans face-off at 8 p.m., Mountain Time.
Wednesday’s game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (14-12, 9-6 MW) is coming off another tough loss Saturday at home, dropping a 59-58 contest against New Mexico. Malene Pedersen led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the loss while Emily Mellema and Allyson Fertig added 11 and 10, respectively.
Ola Ustowska led the Cowgirls with five rebounds, five assists and three steals in the loss.
In conference play, Ustowska leads the team with 49 assists (3.3 APG) and a better than two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio. Fertig leads the Cowgirls in scoring in Mountain West action at 12.1 points per game, as well as rebounding with 8.2 a contest. Fertig is also shooting just under 60-percent from the floor and leads UW with 23 made free throws on 74.2-percent shooting at the line.
Mellema and Pedersen are also averaging in double figures in league play, scoring 11.1 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.
In the last nine games, Pedersen is leading the Cowgirls in scoring at 12.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in eight of those contests. Pedersen is shooting nearly 51-percent (40-79) from the floor and is 24-of-26 (92.3-percent) at the free-throw line during that stretch.
In all games this season, Pedersen is second on the squad in scoring at 10.8 points per game while Fertig is at an even 13 points a contest. Tess Barnes and Emily Mellema both average 9.3 points per game this season overall.
SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State has been snake-bitten by injuries this season as only one student-athlete (Sabrina Ma) has played in all 27 games this season. Jyah Lovett leads the Spartans in scoring at 14.6 points per game but has missed time recently due to injury.
Amhyia Moreland is second on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game and leads SJSU averaging 6.3 rebounds a contest and 40 blocks. Moreland is shooting over 56-percent from the field this season. Sabrina Ma scores 9.4 a game and leads the team with 52 made 3-pointers and is tied for second with 44 assists.
As a team, the Spartans score 59.7 points per game and are allowing 65 a contest. SJSU is shooting 40.5-percent from the floor and 31.5-percent from 3-point range. San Jose opponents are shooting 40.4-percent and 35.4-percent from 3-point range. The Spartans have a plus-2.6 rebounding margin this season and has one more assist in 2023-24.
However, SJSU has committed more than 100 turnovers than its opponents. San Jose averages nearly 13 assists and nine steals per game.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SAN JOSE STATE
Wyoming leads the all-time series with the Spartans, 17-3 and have won 12-straight in the series, including all three meetings last season. This will be the only meeting during the regular season with the Spartans.
The Cowgirls have won the last five in San Jose and is 7-2 on the road all-time in the series. Two seasons ago in the meeting in San Jose, McKinley Dickerson scored a career-high 33 points.
Her 33 points in that contest are the seventh-most in a single game in program history while her 13 made field goals in that Feb. 14, 2022 win, are the sixth-most all-time.
