Cowgirls Ready to Compete at Mountain West Championships

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl golf squad is set for a trip to Rancho Mirage, California this week to compete at the Mountain West Championships April 18-20 hosted at the Mission Hills Golf Club.
“I feel very encouraged about this team’s potential for a great tournament. Jadan and Meghan have been playing very solid all spring. Morgan has it all coming together after a fabulous last round earlier this week,” UW Head Women’s Golf Coach Josey Stender said. “I’m really proud of Grace and her contribution to the lineup these last few events. I would argue Sam has played the most rounds on this course of any of the players in field and she has the focus to play well.”
Jadan Gonzalez will be taking momentum into the MW Championships following a tied for 25th finish last time out at the Silicon Valley Showcase. Competing against a field featuring multiple national ranked athletes, Gonzalez landed her second top-25 finish of the season as well as coming in as one of the Cowgirls top finishers for the fourth straight tournament.
Gonzalez will be joined in the lineup by Morgan Ryan, Samantha Hui, Meghan Vogt and Grace Dunkleberger. Sophie Spiva will also be making the trip to California as a substitute.
Last season the Cowgirls finished ninth at the Mountain West Championships led by Meghan Vogt who finished tied for 35th in her first MW Championship tournament appearance.
Entering the tournament as the reigning Mountain West Champions, No. 8 ranked San Jose State will be the team to beat as they look to repeat as MW Champions. So far, this season the Spartans have won two tournaments along with finishing in the top five at all but one of the tournaments they have competed in.
Last season, San Jose State ran away with the MW Title finishing as the only team under par and coming in over 20 strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
New Mexico, who finished second a season ago at the MW Championships, is currently ranked 43rd in the country and will be the second highest ranked team in the field. UNLV, who is currently ranked 53rd, enters the tournament with some momentum after finishing second their last time out at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.
The first round of play is set to tee off from the 6,270-yard, Par 72 at 8 a.m. MT on Tuesday with the second and third rounds set to be played on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Live results for the Mountain West Championships will be available on Golfstat.com.
