The day began with the Cowgirls (5-4), who have won four of their last five matches, winning a hotly-contested doubles point. UW took two of the three doubles matches to secure the point Sunday, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. At the first spot, Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender continued their torrid start to the season, pulling out a 7-5 win to clinch the point. At the No. 3 position, Jeselle Ante and Lucia Malinak pulled out a 6-4 victory.

On the singles side of things, both teams won three matches. UW won at 2, 3 and 6 with Borodina clinching the match victory at the third spot for the Cowgirls. At No. 2, Noesjka Brink won 6-1 and 7-6. At No. 3, Borodina won a straight-sets nail-biter, 7-6 and 7-6. Malinak rounded-out the wins in singles play, winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.

“I thought doubles was key today,” said Head Coach Dean Clower.

“NAU was disciplined in doubles, which made it very tough for us to play our style. Soph (Zehender) and V (Borodina) were very disciplined and that was the key in their match. Lucia and Jeselle continue to get better and better together. In singles, in all honesty, it came down to the wire and the fight. This win wasn’t about coaching, but the eight Cowgirls getting after it and finding a way to win.”

UW will return home to action next weekend with another two-match week. The Cowgirls host South Dakota at 4 p.m., February 16 and Idaho Noon Feb. 17.
