July 22, 1996, was one of the most exciting nights in the history of Cheyenne Frontier Days. Nearly 23 years later, Garth Brooks still remembers the epic evening every time he puts on his pants.

"That's the buckle I've worn for 20 years. If you see album covers, that's Cheyenne Frontier Days," Brooks said in an interview earlier this year.  "The last time I played (CFD) was on the 100th anniversary and I got to play it with the best damn guy on the planet by the name of Chris LeDoux. That buckle will forever mean the world to me."

For Garth, the highlight of the concert came when LeDoux joined him on stage for a duet of "Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy". The '96 performance was Garth's fourth CFD show. Brooks first came to Cheyenne in 1991 and returned in '93 for a two-night stand.

Will Garth ever come back to Cheyenne?

"I can't invite myself," Brooks joked. "But if I could invite myself, having a 125th-anniversary belt buckle would be cool."

Cheyenne Frontier Days will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2021.
