This past week we got the family out and went on our first camping trip. It is always amazing to me how much stuff you need to spend one night camping out. Of course I have decided never to sleep on the ground again because it takes me a week for my back to feel better. So there are a lot of camping crap that I never used to bring like: cots, pillows, folding chairs pretty much everything but the kitchen sink, well we brought that too!

My youngest son and I went fishing in the morning and perched ourselves on a big rock. With every cast a fish would follow the lure or whatever we put on the hook really, but would not take anything. Now if I was by myself, I would be cursing and getting very frustrated, but with my 7 year old son we were laughing! Fishing makes me always reminisce about all the times, I went fishing with my Dad and my Grandfathers. It’s where time slows and you just concentrate on living in the moment.

After the camping trip I asked my son what was your favorite part of camping and he said “fishing with you, Dad”.  Now he might have just wanted to get on my good side to ask me for a new game for the Wii, but it felt like a true Father-Son-Moment that we both will remember for the rest of your lifes.  So of course we are planning on going fishing again this weekend and I’ll try to teach him how to fly-fish.

This leads me into the 40th Annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby on July 23rd. Start fishing with your kids and teach them what you know or don't know about fishing.

FISHING REPORT for Laramie:

1. Hattie is fishing fair, and is now full. - The Game and Fish just recently stocked Lake Hattie.

Information: Lake Hattie is the largest of the Laramie Plains Lakes at 1500-3000 surface acres depending on water levels. It contains rainbows, browns, lakers, Kokanee salmon, and perch. The browns and rainbows range from 12-30 inches with the occasional 5 to 10 pounder, and the lake trout average 5 to 15 pounds. There is camping and a couple of boat ramps at Lake Hattie. There are, however, no electric of water hookups at the campsites.

2. Twin Buttes is fishing fair.  The Wyoming Game and Fish just recently stocked Twin Buttes.  The fishing should steadily get better throughout the summer. Hatch Chart>

Information: Twin Buttes is a 250-acre impoundment that contains rainbows and browns averaging 12 to 25+ inches. This reservoir offers the angler a great opportunity to catch a true trophy brown in the eight-pound range. Fishing at Twin Buttes is best in the fall when the browns are trying to spawn. Look for fish to be in the shallows with a gravely bottom. There are two boat ramps and overnight camping, but no hookups.

3.  Galett is still fishing well.  The Laramie Plains lakes are a great alternative to blownout rivers.

Information: Galett is the smallest of the Laramie Plains Lakes, at only 34 surface acres. It has rainbow trout from 12 to 24 inches and grass carp. We have good carry over fish at Galett the past couple of winters thanks to efforts from the Wyoming Game & Fish aeration systems. This impoundment is an extremely shallow lake with great vegetation growth full of damsel nymphs and scuds.

4. It's official.  We had 100% winter kill at Meeboer.  The Wyoming Game and Fish restocked Meeboer over a month ago with sub-catchables.

5. The North Platte is beginning to start the runoff.  The flows are beginning to rise and the river is muddy.  If we get another cool bit of weather the river may level off and clear up but it may be July before we are fishing the upper Platte again.  Time to fish the tailwaters.

6. Gray's Reef: The Reef  is running clear from the dam to Casper.  The fishing has been great with the usual cast of characters, worms, scuds, leeches, and egg patterns. PMD nymphs are also producing a fair number of fish.

7. The Miracle Mile is fishing well.  Fish any slow water you can find.

8.  The Big Laramie isleveling off and should start to drop significantly in the next week or two.  Fishing will improve as move through June and into July. Access Points>

9.  The Encampment is leveling off but is still running near 4000 cfs.

FISHING QUOTE OF THE DAY:

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.  ~Doug Larson
