The Wyoming Cowgirls rolled to a perfect weekend and the title at the 2015 Rumble in the Rockies volleyball tournament.

Wyoming head coach Chad Callihan said to start 3-0,

“We’ll take it every day. This team has a goal of making the NCAA tournament, and we know we’ve got to be able to win these matches against these good teams; it’s why we put them on the schedule. (I’m) really proud of this group for doing whatever they had to do.”

The Cowgirls opened with a bang. They knocked off 14th-ranked Ohio State 3-sets-to-1 Friday night. In front of the fourth largest crowd in school history, UW won 25-23, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-23. Junior Kayla Slofkiss led the way with 11 kills and 12 digs.

Coming off that emotional high, the Cowgirls managed to sweep South Dakota midday Saturday in three sets. Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16. Junior Laura Beach had eight kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.

Wyoming completed the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Butler Saturday night. Senior Bridget Shanahan led four Cowgirls in double figures in kills with 16. Sophomore setter Dani Westfall finished with a career-high 35 assists. The match scores were 25-20, 29-27, 25-27 and 25-16.

Senior DS Allison Waldvogel was named tournament MVP. Beach and Slofkiss were also named to the All-Tournament team.

Callihan said you can attribute hard work for Allison earning MVP honors.

“She has come in and just gotten better and better and better… Really did a fantastic job defensively and in serve receive for us this weekend; kept several plays alive and was a big key to that defense.”

UW heads to the Pacific Northwest for the Gonzaga Invitational next weekend.
