The Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team is underway with competition at the Mountain West Championships in Minneapolis, MN.

The Cowgirls are trying to break into the top three in the conference for the first time since 2013. They took fourth last year behind two-time defending league champ Boise State, as well as, Nevada, and San Diego State.

There are seven Wyoming Cowgirls that were in the top 10 of an event heading into this meet. Junior Daniela Luna Rocha had the top time in the 1000 freestyle event. Meanwhile, senior Samantha Burke is the defending champion in the 100 backstroke event.

Others to watch include senior Isobel Ryan, sophomore Hannah Mclean-Leonard, and senior divers CeeJay Harris and Peyton GrandPre.

Head coach Dave Denniston knows they’ll be tough competition this weekend, but says the Cowgirls have high expectations.

Wyoming is in seventh place after the first day on Wednesday. The Cowgirls scored 113.50 team points. Nevada leads at 204 with San Diego State second, and Boise State third.

For UW, GrandPre took 11th in 1-meter diving. The 200-medley relay came in ninth with a season-best time of 1:41.17. The 800-meter freestyle relay finished eighth.

The meet continues through Saturday in Minneapolis at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
