Wyoming junior kicker Cooper Rothe has been selected as the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week. This the first honor for Rothe this season.

Rothe made his lone field goal attempt and went 4-4 on point-after-touchdown attempts in Wyoming’s 31-3 victory at New Mexico last Saturday.

The junior averaged 61.3 yards per kick-off and had four touchbacks in the game. When the Lobos did return the ball, twice, they were held to 17 yards per return.

Rothe is a finalist for the 2018 Lou Groza Award, which goes to the nation’s outstanding place-kicker each season. He’s No. 1 in the nation in field goal percentage at 94.1 percent (16-17). Rothe is tied for first in PAT percentage at 100 percent, having made all his attempts (28-28) this season.

This is the second time in Rothe’s career he’s earned the honor. The previous time was last year after the Cowboys win over CSU.

Wyoming finished its regular season at 6-6 overall and 4-4, good for third in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West. The Cowboys are waiting to see if they receive an invitation to a bowl game.

This also marks the second consecutive week UW has had at least one Mountain West Player of the Week honoree.
