ACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Wildlife officials say the Casper man who was maimed by a bear near Jackson had been calling for elk before the attack.

Reggie Riebe was reported to be in good condition Wednesday, though he suffered injuries to his hands, arms, buttocks and scalp. Riebe was attacked Tuesday morning while bow hunting with a friend.

Wyoming Game and Fish Department officials say Riebe was 100 to 150 yards away from his hunting partner using an elk call when the bear attacked. He was in an area with lots of deadfall and low visibility. Game and Fish suspects the attacking animal was a grizzly bear.

Officials are warning hunters that game calls can attract predators as well as prey.
