The Wyoming Cowgirls have been picked in eighth place in the Mountain West preseason women’s basketball poll released Wednesday.

Wyoming received 123 points in balloting of the league’s 11 head coaches and select media members. No Cowgirl was chosen for the preseason all-conference team.

In a release from the University of Wyoming, head coach Joe Legerski reacted to the poll by saying,

“There are a number of factors that contribute to a preseason selection and the actual finish. Some factors you can control and some you cannot. This young team continues to focus on the challenges ahead and the goal of maximizing their talent level.”

Defending regular season champion Colorado State was selected as the preseason favorite for a third consecutive year. The Rams received 17 first-place votes and 283 points in the poll. Boise State got 11 first-place votes and 271 points in the balloting.

CSU also had the MW Preseason Player of the Year in senior guard Ellen Nystrom. She averaged 11.1 points, 5.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game last season.

Wyoming opens their basketball season Nov. 4 with an exhibition game at home versus South Dakota Mines. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
