Yesterday WYDOT reported that they had cleared the last of the snow that was left on WYO 130 after a fairly mild winter. You might remember that last year the stretch of road did not open until June 10th as crews worked 60 hour weeks for over a month to clear the dense snow. Almost a whole month earlier than last year, the road has officially opened between Laramie and Saratoga. WYDOT efforts will now shift to break through snow pack on WYO 70 over Battle Pass between Encampment and Savery. Both passes are in high elevation areas, and may have wet weather conditions and cold nights, so despite WYO 130 being open for the season, winter weather conditions could still cause the road to close throughout the year.

The opening of the road is not only a great opportunity to take a scenic drive but also to recreate on the vast areas that are now easily accessible via WYO 130. Mirror lake provides great fishing when it thaws, and there is also a trail that runs along the ridge line above the lakes that makes for an enjoyable experience on calm days. Of course Saratoga also has some wondeful hot springs that don't take nearly as long to access with the road now open as well.
